Role details

  • Own end-to-end PostgreSQL operations for high-write, high-concurrency production systems including query plans, vacuum and bloat, replication, backup, HA, and sharding
  • Work with application teams on access patterns
  • Migrate from AWS RDS to self-hosted Postgres on Kubernetes
  • Diagnose and resolve performance issues from query to storage engine level, including indexing, query planning, vacuum and bloat management, and tuning under sustained write load.
  • Own the operational aspects of the Postgres fleet, including backup, replication, and high availability for self-managed systems.
  • Work on sharding, partitioning, and architectural decisions to scale the data layer as data and traffic grow.
  • Set standards for running Postgres and collaborate with application engineers on database behavior and access patterns.
  • Shape the long-term direction of the company's data infrastructure.
  • Deep PostgreSQL internals (MVCC, the query planner, autovacuum)
  • Real sharding experience beyond table partitioning
  • Self-managed databases in production
  • Engineering depth to work directly with application teams on access patterns
  • Deep PostgreSQL expertise, including internals like MVCC, vacuum and bloat, query planner, indexing, and replication.
  • Production ownership of PostgreSQL at scale, with experience managing high-traffic services, large datasets, and high write throughput.
  • Experience operating self-managed PostgreSQL on Kubernetes, bare-metal, or VMs, including backup, replication, and high availability.
  • Experience sharding a real PostgreSQL workload.
  • Ability to read and write code, and connect database behavior to application access patterns.
  • Proficiency in using AI tooling effectively and critically evaluating its output.

High-write, high-concurrency APIs for serving billions of requests a month backed by PostgreSQL databases

50+ engineers

Description

Stream runs 35–40 PostgreSQL databases (largest: 15TB) behind high-write, high-concurrency APIs serving billions of requests a month. We’re migrating from AWS RDS to self-hosted Postgres on Kubernetes and need someone who has owned this end-to-end: query plans, vacuum and bloat, replication, backup, HA, sharding. Required: deep Postgres internals (MVCC, the query planner, autovacuum), real sharding experience beyond table partitioning, self-managed databases in production, and enough engineering depth to work directly with application teams on access patterns. Explicit non-goals: RDS/Aurora-only backgrounds, analytics/data-warehouse experience, or DBAs who don’t code. Strong plus: CloudNativePG, Kubeblocks, logical replication, CockroachDB experience.
